And we're off! / by Sophie Laruelle

After only two weeks of working in South Korea, I got a paid vacation! Sweet, right?

Turns out that the first week of October is a national holiday in Korea called Chuseok. Everything including the theater closes down, and many of my new friends were jetting off to incredible destinations: New Zealand, Cambodia, and Taiwan, just to name a few. While I was originally going to stay in Korea and do some more exploring, I ended up deciding to join some friends who were going to Hanoi, Vietnam. I am so glad I did.

The trip was incredible. We spent three days sailing around Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay, sleeping on the boat one night and stopping on a tiny island for another. We woke up for 5 AM sunrises and spent our days kayaking and exploring remote caves.

Then, we took an overnight train up to a town called Sa Pa and embarked on a two day hiking trip overlooking the rice fields. It was pretty remarkable despite the dreary weather. My calves thanked me later!

We finished the week with two days in Hanoi. It was hot and chaotic and dreamy and intoxicating. We had incredible food for incredible prices and met the kindest, most genuine and exciting people I have in a while.

Now, I'm back in Korea and Vietnam feels like a distant dream. Back to creating material and performing for the most eager and inquisitive young audiences. I feel inspired and grounded and enlightened. THANK YOU VIETNAM.
